75 years of peace in 2020
In 2020 we will live 75 years in peace and freedom in Western Europe. It is important to know and not to forget what preceded it and what sacrifices and efforts it took. We want to reach new generations with the Back to Westerbork project. “Our generation” can learn about this part of our history through parents or grandparents who lived through the Second World War. Future generations will no longer be able to do that.
Return to Westerbork contributed to this in 2019 and 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced an important part of the program to be postponed to 2021. In this year too, we wanted to contribute to the attention for 75 (+1 ) years of peace and freedom in the Netherlands and Germany. Our goal: to make the younger generations realize that peace and freedom cannot be taken for granted. You have to constantly work for it. Just like cycling; it is not self-evident that you continue, you have to keep pedaling. We want to pass on the lessons of the Second World War, especially about peace, freedom and cooperation, to new generations.
Educational bike ride, teaching materials and seminars
To achieve our goals, we organized two seminars in 2019 and 2020 and developed teaching materials for secondary vocational education. In 2021 we organized the (postponed) educational cycling tour from Auschwitz to Westerbork.
